Many customers are looking for an alternative to the standard heated towel rail as they need extra heat in the bathroom, working closely with our customers we recognise that heat, functionality and style are key requirements. Its with this in mind that we have created a solution which has proven popular for a number of our customers. Whether the customer is looking for a contemporary feel with tuba steel radiators or something traditional using cast iron radiators the concept is the same. We used a tubular steel radiator with a hand made towel rail sited above the radiator. This gives a great stylish look without the need to compromise on heat…

Aluminium radiators are quickly becoming the choice of architects, designers and homeowners alike, but what makes this abundant metal so appealing? Sara Hale of Walney radiators explains all

Today’s average family home is quite different from that of twenty or thirty years ago. Nowadays many houses are left empty as both parents work, children are at school and weekends are spent out and about. Furthermore, the current climate change means that winters aren’t as cold as they once were. These issues make a remarkable impact on our heating requirements.

Conventional central heating systems with stainless steel radiators are all well and good when people are at home more often than not and need a radiator that will retain heat for as long as possible. But these heating systems take time to get the house warm because of the amount of water that has to circulate in the system. The differences in the way people in today’s society live their lives have had an influence on what people want from their heating system. For this reason, there has been a significant increase in the amount of people choosing aluminium.

Aluminium possesses many properties that make it the perfect material for radiators. It is the most abundant metal in the earth’s crust, and the third most abundant element overall. It makes up about eight per cent of the earth’s solid surface and is therefore one of the few metals in which the availability of raw materials is literally unlimited.

One of the biggest advantages of aluminium radiators is their low water content. In fact, aluminum radiators hold eighty per cent less water than their conventional counterparts. This means that the water quickly heats up and circulates, so you can turn on your central heating when you get home and your house or apartment warms up immediately, being extremely responsive to thermostat changes. Vice versa, aluminium radiators cool down very quickly when you turn them off. In this way, the boiler needs to be turned on for a very short period of time only, converting to significant energy savings, excellent cost efficiency and lower bills for the homeowner.

Aluminium is also non-corrosive. This is due to the fact that once exposed to air, the surface of aluminum will quickly develop a thin, microscopic layer of oxide over its top, which will stop the metal from rusting. Aluminium radiators also undergo specific multi-phase treatments before the final coating, making the external and internal surfaces highly resistant to the corrosive action of the water in the system and the surrounding environment.

Aluminium weighs less than any other radiator material, making it easier to handle, transport and install; in fact they can be mounted on almost any wall. The higher output of this type of radiator, compared to cast iron and steel, means they can be slightly smaller, saving on running costs and space.

Choosing an aluminium radiator is also better for the environment. As well as wasting less energy when in use, aluminium collected for recycling can circulate in an almost endless cycle. The loss of metal from oxidation during smelting is negligible, averaging only a few percent of the total mass. The quality of the re-melted metal is so high that it can be used for the same product time and again. Aluminium radiators are also more eco-friendly to manufacture. This is due to the fact that aluminium designs are lead-free, compared to the copper brass designs historically used by the industry.

Aluminium radiators also look good too. The great thing about aluminium radiators is the infinite range of designs, finishes and colours available.

K8 is a range of aluminium products are constructed in extruded aluminium alloy, with a high thermal conductivity, superior to that of other metal or alloys normally used. The extruded alloy allows fast heating at a lower temperature of the heating system, at the same thermal output. Their features are unique in Italy, both from a technical and from an aesthetic view point. With 90 per cent less water content than traditional radiators, these products offer unrivalled water content.

The K8 range is unique because it is available in any RAL colour. They also are available in any size and therefore can easily replace the existing radiators without breaking any wall to reposition water piping, a consistent saving for whoever is installing them.

Italian company, ProjectClima, is a relatively young company, creating the Adacto radiator which is a new way of approaching heating and not just in the home. The radiator is covered in aluminium tiles, offering the customer limitless design and colour choices. You change the colours yourself simply with the help of a screwdriver. The front covers can be drilled to offer the possibility of fixing accessories such as hangers, towel rails, etc.

The radiator is also unique in its connection system. ProjectClima has devised a new flexible hose that enables the radiators to be connected to the hydraulic system without the necessity of pipe centres, with an adjustable wall mounting system that lets you move the fixing point from the radiator itself. The radiators are available in various sizes, ranging from 500mm – 2400mm high and from 200mm wide. Typical costs will fall between £450 and £1,500 depending on design.

Walney radiators, the supplier of high quality radiator products in the UK, will be showcasing its unique aluminium range at the KBB show at the NEC in Birmingham from 2-5 March.

The aluminium products come from Italian radiator manufacturers, ProjectClima and K8, companies which have made a huge impact in the industry.

ProjectClima is a relatively young company, creating the Adacto collection which is a new and unique concept. Built in aluminium using a variety of tiles in different shapes, colours and finishes, the customer has complete control over the design of a radiator, producing their very own work of art.

“The ADACTO radiator has been designed with an aluminium profile with the help of a professional team of engineers and after undertaking several tests at the Polytechnic of Milan’s University,” says Massimo Melloni of Project Clima. “The main characteristic of the profile section is the capacity to withdraw a very high quantity of energy from the water that goes through it. This process enables you to use a very limited quantity of water compare to traditional radiators”

“From an aesthetic point of view, the radiator has been created with the help and advice of many experts and designers, and it has the characteristic of being covered by aluminium tiles (covers) that once on the radiant base, can offer limitless possibilities and many customising choices,” explains Melloni.

“The uniqueness of this range is of instant appeal to both designers and the discerning home owner,” says Hale. “We’re already experiencing a huge amount of interest in the products.”

The K8 range of aluminium products are made through a property technology, based on extruded aluminium for units and collectors too, not to be confused with aluminium products made through extruded/die-cast aluminium or entirely die-cast aluminium. Their features are unique in Italy, both from a technical and from an aesthetic view point. With 90 per cent less water content than traditional radiators, these products offer unrivalled water content.

“The K8 range is unique because it is available in any RAL colour” says Hale. “They also are available in any size and therefore can easily replace the existing radiators without breaking any wall to reposition water piping, a consistent saving for whoever is installing them.”

Why choose aluminium?

Today’s average family home is quite different from that of twenty or thirty years ago. Nowadays many houses are left empty as both parents work, children are at school and weekends are spent out and about. Furthermore, the current climate change means that winters aren’t as cold as they once were. These issues make a remarkable impact on our heating requirements.

“Conventional central heating systems with stainless steel radiators were all well and good when people were at home more often than not and needed a radiator that would retain heat for as long as possible,” says Sara Hale, marketing manager at Walney Radiators. “But these heating systems took up to an hour to get the house warm because of the amount of water that had to circulate in the system. The differences in the way people in today’s society live their lives have had an impact on what people want from their heating system – steel panel radiators are no longer economical for many households.”

It’s not just a quick to heat system that people are looking for when they buy a radiator. “People want their radiator to look good too,” says Hale. “The radiator has become something that many people show off and make a feature of, not something that is hidden away in a corner. In addition, people are more conscious of environmental impact then ever before – so they don’t want to waste energy.”

So can the discerning radiator customer have their cake and eat it – that is, can they have a radiator that will tick every box? Hale believes that they can, “For a long time our showroom has been graced with an array of futuristic creations that would satisfy the most design-conscious buyer – so that box is easily ticked. However, the challenge is in making design-led radiators emit heat quicker, whilst being kind to the environment.

“The answer lies in the type of radiator material. Your major options are cast iron, stainless steel and aluminum. Cast iron is great for its traditional good looks, stainless steel doesn’t rust and retains heat for a long time, but in my opinion, aluminium is the best for today’s average household.”

So what is it about aluminum radiators that is so special? “The main advantage is their low water content,” says Hale. In fact, aluminum radiators hold eighty per cent less water than their conventional counterparts. This means that the water quickly heats up and circulates, so you can turn on your central heating when you get home and your house or apartment warms up immediately, being extremely responsive to thermostat changes. This converts to excellent cost efficiency and lower bills for the homeowner.

“Aluminium is also non-corrosive, says Hale. “This is due to the fact that once exposed to air, the surface of aluminum will quickly develop a thin, microscopic layer of oxide over its top, which will stop the metal from rusting. A further advantage is that aluminium radiators are very light and easy to install compared to conventional models. This means that they can be mounted on almost any wall, and installation fees are often lower too.”

Choosing an aluminium radiator is better for the environment.

Walney UK Limited, the supplier of high quality designer radiators, has announced that it has been given UK distribution rights of the Adacto range of products.

Conceived in Italy, the Adacto range is a new and unique concept. Built using a variety of tiles in different shapes, colours and finishes, the customer has complete control over the design of a radiator, producing their very own work of art. Alternatively, if the customer needs some inspiration, they can browse or order from an existing ‘gallery’ of designs.

“The Adacto range is extremely versatile,” says Sara Hale, marketing manager at Walney. “The flexible concept means that a Adacto radiator will suit any architecture and furnishing. With this product, radiators are no longer something to be hidden away in a corner – they can provide a real focal point of the room.

“Furthermore, every stage of the radiators’ production has been studied to ensure minimal ecological impact – all the materials used in the manufacture are recyclable, so as well as looking great, they are kind to the environment too.”

The radiators are available in various sizes, ranging from 500mm – 2400mm high and from 200mm wide. Thanks to the aluminium construction and the patented cover system, the radiators offer substantial heat output when compared with other designer radiators. Installation couldn’t be simpler as its flexible hose system attaches directly onto the valves.

“The uniqueness of this range is of instant appeal to both designers and the discerning home owner,” says Hale. “We’re already experiencing a huge amount of interest in the products – I have no doubt that Adacto is the future of radiator design.”

Typical costs will fall between £450 and £1,500 depending on design. For more information or a brochure call 0870 733 0011.

Walney Radiators is proud to be associated with the major renovations at Argrennan House, having supplied a number of traditional cast iron products for the property.

Argrennan House is an A-listed building based in Kirkcudbright, Dumfries, Scotland. Built in 1672, it is a major landmark in the area and is currently being converted into a health and wellness retreat, which will cost the owner, Patrick Flannagan in excess of £1.5 million and take approximately two years to complete. Patrick comments, “There’s been a huge amount of preparation involved in the refurb project, so it is important that we have a full understanding of requirements from all our suppliers. The service we received from Walney has been second to none, the radiators are fantastic, and they were approved by Historic Scotland without any problems whatsoever – which made the wholeprocess very easy.”

The Cast Iron products supplied to Argrennan House are the most famous of the Walney range, as Sara Hale, Marketing Manager at the company explains, “The traditional cast iron radiators have been associated with the Walney name for over thirty years, and are increasingly popular at the moment. The Victoria model was the product chosen for Argrennan House, a product which is very flexible, as it is available in nine different formats. There are a further four products in our cast iron range.”

Dave Thompson, the Consulting Engineer for the project was very keen to use the Walney product. He explains why,“After discussions with the National Trust Architectural Advisor, I decided that the Walney Victoria Radiator was the best product on the market for this project, as it was most in-keeping with the era of the house. Despite looking extremely traditional, they actually work under a state-of-the-art comfort system, whereby hidden controls separate from the radiators allow the heating to be completely programmable by the owner. The radiators have therefore given us total flexibility”

Since its establishment, Walney has provided radiators and heated towel rails to thousands of homes and businesses across the UK. As well as their successful cast iron range, there is also a wide selection of contemporary styles, as Sara explains, “Wewanted to put together acollection of contemporary radiators that would set a benchmark, and I think we’ve definitely achieved that. Our range offers excellent choice as well as value for money, so everyone, whether it be an Architect, Builder, Specifier or member of the public, can get a fantastic look without spending a fortune.”

This month sees the re-launch of one of the most recognised brands in its industry – Walney UK (previously Walney PMP).

Since the early eighties, Walney has provided radiators and heated towel rails to thousands of homes across the UK, establishing itself as aleader, setting a benchmark in terms of quality and design. Now, almost thirty years from its establishment, and the company is re-launching itself, bringing back the traditional cast iron radiators it is most famous for, as well as launching a range of contemporary counterparts.

Sara Hale, Marketing Manager for the company has worked hard on the project, “I’ve carried out a lot of research for this re-launch, speaking to many industry professionals and organisations. Everyone has shown so much enthusiasm and support – the traditional Walney brand brings a great deal of respect, we want that to continue and thrive.”

Far from being just a re-launch of old products, the team at Walney mean big business. Now backed by multi-million pound AAC group, they have gained new premises and over 40,000 sq ft of manufacturing space. Sara comments, “I believe Walney is pivotal in the evolution of next generation radiators. We’re investing a lot of time and money into product research, trying to stay one step ahead of trends and technology, producing one of the best ranges available on the market today”.

As well as offering a wide selection of stocked products including contemporary, designer, feature and period radiators, the company also offers a made to order service, designing and manufacturing to personal specifications.
